Even though it’s not officially fall yet, the time has come to transition your closet from summer to fall. After last week’s post about fall dresses, I’ve been getting lots of questions along these lines: “what else should I add to my closet for fall?” Today, you’re in luck. Here are my 10 fall must-haves.
Most of these are classic pieces you might already own. If not, go ahead and add them to your cart now–just click on each pic to go directly to that item.
You can mix and match these endlessly to create outfits you’ll feel great in all season. Next week, I’ll show you some fall trends and ways you can incorporate these with your basics for the most stylish fall ever.
Tunics are great because they’re universally flattering and versatile. I’ve professed my love for this tunic too many times to count. It’s a piece I reach for at least once a week from now through spring.
When the temperatures drop, add a cardigan and/or jacket. Seriously, you’ll get so much wear out of this one. Here are a few more tunic options. These all come in multiple colors.
T-shirts are another fall must-have because they’re versatile and easy to layer. This is the one everyone fell in love with at the Anniversary Sale, me included.
It has 4+ stars with nearly 1,000 reviews. Because of that however, it keeps selling out. Nordstrom has been restocking regularly, so keep checking back if your size isn’t available right now. Other similar options from the same brand: THIS one and THIS one.
I’m usually between an XS and S, and I chose a small in this one. It was a bit too large initially, but after washing, it’s just right. I like the looser and longer fit.
Also, the tag says “dry clean only,” but I don’t think that’s necessary. I just wash mine in cold water and lay them out to dry. Last fall, I bought several of these t-shirts and am so happy to see them restocked. These are super soft and come in several colors.
If you already have basic tees that you love, try an embellished one. Twist hems and ruffles are a huge fall trends, and I found this ruffle sleeve tee a few weeks ago. It fits loosely and has a v-back. I got lots of compliments on it.
Cardigans are always a fall favorite, and this year, longer cardigans are very “in.” This one is so soft, and you can wear it with anything. It runs large, so size down one.
More cardigans to keep you stylish and cozy:
For days when you need something a little more substantial, a jacket is the way to go. This one is my long-time favorite. It’s perfect now and really throughout the year. I have an XS, and I cinch it in a bit with the adjustable waist tabs for more definition.
Nordstrom also has some killer jackets this year. This leather jacket looks so much more expensive than it’s $98 price tag. Throw it on with a white tee, skinny jeans, and booties–a great everyday fall outfit. It also pairs well with dresses.
Here are more great choices for you:
5. DARK SKINNY JEANS
Everyone–yes, everyone–needs a good pair of dark skinny jeans. The darker color is great for fall, and they’re easier to dress up than lighter denim.
Choose a pair with plenty of stretch, and they’re as comfortable as leggings. These are a steal for $39. Size down to prevent them from stretching out too much, resulting in saggy bottom.
Other high-rated skinny jeans under $100 include these:
If you want to invest a little more money for jeans you’ll wear for years, these are my top pick. I’ve had mine for longer than I can remember, and they still fit beautifully. This style is available in many colors–you can’t go wrong with any of them.
6. SOLID DRESS
As I mentioned last week, I love dresses because they’re so easy. No need to decide whether your shirt and pants match, just throw on a dress and go.
Solid color dresses are easy to “dress” up or down with shoes and accessories, and they’ll take you from work to weekend. You can easily change them up by adding a jacket or cardigan.
I just picked up this one in both navy and black. It’s a a light crepe material–great for day or night and easy to warm up with a cardigan or jacket when it gets cold. It comes in 7 colors and is under $50!!
A few more you might like:
7. STATEMENT JEWELRY
I have an equal amount of appreciation for statement earrings and statement necklaces, so for numbers’ sake, I’m calling this #7 must-have “statement jewelry.”
You can change the feel of any outfit just by adding one of these accessories–not both. If I’m wearing statement earrings, I’ll go without a necklace, and vice versa.
These gold beauties are true show-stoppers. They’re a tad on the heavy side, but nothing some Lobe Wonders can’t handle. I threw them on with a t-shirt and jean shorts last week, and everyone asked about them. They also come in white.
I’ve been rotating through these and 3 other pairs (all are light and easy on the ears). There are so many great statement earring and necklace options–both in “neutral” metallics and with pops of color.
Booties are essential for fall. Yes, over-the-knee and tall boots are nice, as well, but for an everyday fall look, stick with booties.
You have so many great options to choose from this year. Grey is a really popular color this season, and it’s a nice neutral. I really love this taupe pair (which also come in gray), and black is always in style.
All of these booties are under $150.
I’m a bit sneaker-obsessed these days–remember all the good one’s in last week’s post? First and foremost, sneakers are comfortable. Perfect for running errands, chasing kids, walking the dog, etc. Fortunately, you don’t have to sacrifice style for comfort.
These are the ones I’m most excited about. Velvet is very popular this year, and it adds interesting texture to this classic style. These also come in black and a beautiful plum color. Here are some sneakers I picked up recently, along with others I know you’ll love.
Every closet needs some metallic accents. Just like metallics add interest and texture to home decor, they also amp up your personal style.
Obviously, small doses are most appropriate for daily wear. Take this crossbody bag, for instance. I originally purchased for use as an evening bag for date nights and things. I had to run to the mall last week and didn’t want to carry a giant tote, so I brought this bag along. So many people asked me about it.
I’m also a huge fan of metallic shoes like these gold ballet flats. They go with everything, and they’re so incredibly comfortable. Mine are three years old and were definitely worth the investment. The color is “gold leather,” not “gold metallic” which are much brighter.
These flats also come in a ton of other colors–I have light grey suede, tan leather, and leopard. They really are the most comfortable flats ever.
Here are more metallic pieces worth considering:
If you made it with me through this entire post, CONGRATULATIONS AND THANK YOU! And now you know all about my 10 fall must-haves.
